Response to Celluloid Closet

A movie like Celluloid Closet is naturally going to ignite passionate debate. I think homosexuality is one of the few topics, like abortion, that has the potential to pose a threat to people's core values and sense of self. It is a topic that has the power to make an OTHER out of someone who would not be considered "different" if it were not for their sexual preferences. The fight AGAINST same-sex marriage goes against the fundamental elements of what it SHOULD mean to be an American.  Who someone loves and wants to commit too should have no place in government. I should be able to marry a damn monkey if I wanted to. Although, that might piss off PETA.

The most powerful part of the movie was the trip through cinematic history. When I saw how GLBT individuals were stereotyped, demonized, and murdered because of their sexuality, I could easily make connections to how our culture became so completely homophobic.

Also, while I am on my Equality-In-America-Is-A-Joke soapbox, I will also ask this: why is the conservative political party the force behind the push to ban same-sex marriage at the constitutional level? I thought they were all about a reduction of governmental influence on the lives of American citizens? Isn't control over who you can and cannot commit too THE most personal decision an individual can make in their lifetime? Hopefully, Obama will have a little heart-to-heart with Schwarzenagier while he is in Cali this week.
